About

The aim of this research project is to bring together global partners within the arts, social sciences, and medical sciences to examine temporary implants and the body. This interdisciplinary examination will center around the development of thoughts on temporary implants: these are technological devices placed in a human body in order to support, mediate or enhance biological structures. Temporary implants are common. This is due, in part, to an ageing population, the normalization of cosmetic surgery, and advances in surgical practices. The rhetoric around temporary implants is mainly descriptive, functional (Hogle, 2005) and medical and then sold to us as a device that will make your life better, an object that will make you “normal” or a thing that will turn you into a monster. Implants are rarely discussed outside of specialized communities The blog is an attempt to address the physical and theoretical lack and widen public discourse and academic research on the topic.
